Respect yourself and those around you — from the Career Opportunities Podcast [Audio]
Episodio en Career Opportunities with Douglas E. Welch
Respect yourself and those around you — from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” It can be the smallest things that effect the success of your career. My 16 year old son has reminded me of some of the behavioral basics that can mean the difference between being successful in your job and being fired. You might think these behaviors are small, but I can guarantee you, they can be be some of the biggest annoyances to those around you. If there is one thing you never want to be in your career, it is annoying, so take heed of the advice noted below. Respect the time of others Adults should always respect the time of others. You shouldn’t make people wait on you, nor you on them. This is a waste of the person’s time and, I believe shows great disrespect. Any manager who is chronically late to meetings is showing very clearly what he thinks of his staff. His time (or hers) is obviously worth more than the staff. Staff will pick up on this clear indicator and begin to r esent it more and more. No one likes being disrespected and if a manager isn’t careful, they might find themselves out of a job entirely. You can’t expect staff to respect you or your initiatives if you constantly disrespect their time and efforts. The secret to career success is just showing up — from the Career Opportunities Podcast [Audio]
Episodio en Career Opportunities with Douglas E. Welch
The secret to career success is just showing up — from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” “80% of success is showing up” — Woody Allen The older I get the more I begin to see the wisdom in Allen’s quote. Throughout my life I have seen those who “show up” in life and work and those who constantly talk about what they want to do/might do/do if they only had the time. Perhaps is more a part of life in Los Angeles, but I get the feeling that people all over the world are faced with great problems in simply showing up. They can invent 101 excuses why they didn’t show up, but can’t seem to find the one reason , the one project, the one exciting moment where they show up and become fully involved in their life and work. What is worse is these same people often spend an inordinate amount of time bemoaning their fate. They blame everyone and everything else except the one person, the one thing, the one place where the fault really lies — themselves. Episodio en Career Opportunities with Douglas E. Welch
It’s OK to investigate new job opportunities — from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” It is a freelance work world out there today. As I often coach people, you need to think and act as a freelancer, even if you are currently employed full time. We all know how easy it is to go from employee to unemployed these days and it is important to protect yourself as much as possible from unforeseen layoffs. I find, though, that many people are greatly conflicted when it comes time to investigate new job opportunities. They can feel a sense of fear, a sense of disloyalty, a sense that they are somehow cheating their current employer. Let me be the first to allay your fears. When you investigate new job opportunities, you are practicing the best elements of career self-preservation. You are doing exactly what needs to be done to build the career you deserve. Episodio en Career Opportunities with Douglas E. Welch
Make your invisible work visible — from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” For most of us, our career and work skills are hidden from all but our immediate co-workers and clients. Most of our friends, family, and certainly our loose connections and strangers often have no idea what we do for a living or how we accomplish it. As you might imagine, this can make it very difficult to move forward in your career. This is especially true in a world where visibility of both ourselves and our skills is a major tool in attracting opportunity to us. While you may be doing great work, if no one knows about it — internally or externally — that work is not benefiting you in some very important ways. To make it work better for your, you need to make your invisible skills, talents, and accomplishments visible to the outside world. Career change requires small actions, not dramatic ones — from the Career Opportunities Podcast
Episodio en Career Opportunities with Douglas E. Welch
Career change requires small actions, not dramatic ones — from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” There comes a time in every career when you need to make a change. You need more challenges. You need a new manager or company. You need something different that will allow you to continue to grow and thrive. In the midst of this, you can often feel that you need to take some dramatic action. You need to quit your job, go back to school, move to a different city or country, divorce your spouse, go off the grid. The truth is, though, that while dramatic actions may seem the best way to jumpstart your career, it is the small, individual actions you take every day that bring the most change. Dramatic actions change your life for the moment. Small actions change your life for a lifetime. Ebb and flow in your career — from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” Just like everything in life, there is an ebb and flow to your work and your career. There will be times when your career is in a relatively steady state — simply something that you do on a daily basis. At other times it will be moving forward like a river in flood or an angry sea, pushing you about and, hopefully, driving you forward. Knowing how to act in each of these scenarios is important to your overall well-being as well as the success of your career. Episodio en Career Opportunities with Douglas E. Welch
Mighty oaks from little acorns grow — from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” In our lives and careers we are most often concerned with the big issues — the big project, the big money, the big success. Unfortunately, this often means that we too easily lose sight of all the small pieces that make up the larger successes. Ignoring these smaller aspects can almost ensure that the bigger successes never arrive. Failing to focus on the small, day-to-day decisions you make can stunt your career and leave you wondering why big success never seems to happen to you. Who are you making happy? — from the Career Opportunities Podcast [Audio]
Episodio en Career Opportunities with Douglas E. Welch
Who are you making happy? — from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” Often in the past here at Career Opportunities I have talked about the concept of self-preservation. I am a firm believer that in order to help others, you need to be in a good place yourself. Thinking about yourself. Doing what you need. Building the life and career you deserve isn’t selfish, it is simply stoking the fires that will warm those around you. Anyone who spends their lives pleasing others only will eventually find themselves filled with resentment and anger and lacking the energy to do anything at all. I don’t want any of you to find yourself in this position. I want you to grow in both success and happiness. 50 is just a number –– from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” The day has arrived. I can no longer pretend I am 25 anymore, even if my mental age seems stuck around that time. This weekend I turned 50 and while it certainly wasn’t unexpected, it can be a little challenging sometimes. This is especially true when you notice that some people begin to treat you differently. Knowing only your age, they think you might not be hip and cool (like I ever was) and very, very set in your ways. They might expect you to be conservative, careful and overly critical of the changes around you. Those of you who know me though , through these podcasts and elsewhere, know that I constantly fight against such issues, I try to keep my mind open, my thinking fresh and my curiosity turned way, way up. This is what I think it means to be 50. Carefully consider the career advice you receive — from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” As a long time career writer, I read a lot about careers. I follow career advisors and HR professionals on social media, read their blogs, browse magazines and other sources. One common source of career advice are human resources (HR) professionals. They are often consulted for inside information on what it takes to get hired, how to approach the hiring process and more. Unfortunately, I find that a lot of guidance and advice they give is often designed to make their life and work easier, not build the career you deserve. Attend college to develop a life and career, not just get a job — from the Career Opportunities Podcast [Audio]
Episodio en Career Opportunities with Douglas E. Welch
Attend college to develop a life and career, not just get a job — from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” Even in this year of 2014, I still meet lots of people, either just entering college or just finishing, who think that their time in college was intended to just get them a job. Like following some class rubric, they put in the time, check the checkboxes and expect to be hired within weeks. While I don’t think a college degree ever necessarily worked this way in the past, I think it is even less true to today. You don’t go to college to get a job. You go to college to learn facts and skills that you can apply to any number of jobs when the time comes. You never can tell what curves you will be thrown in your life and trying to learn just those items you need to a specific job could leave you unemployed once you graduate. What works for others might not work for you — from the Career Opportunities podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” If you are like most people, you are constantly researching, reading and watching to find ways to make your career and life better. You read blogs, listen to podcasts, watch videos to see how others have achieved success — more importantly — how you might achieve success, too. While it is certainly important to learn as much as you can, you should hold one, fundamental thought in the back of your mind. No matter how much success someone else has achieved, what worked for them might not work for you. Each of us is unique, with our own set of wants, needs and desires. Therefore our methods can and must be different, too. Sure we can take advice from others, adapt their behaviors, try on their methods and tactics, but there will times when we simply can’t use their information, simply because of our own unique differences. Video interviews and putting your best self forward — from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” In today’s connected world, video interviews are becoming quite typical when you are looking for a job. Whether the position is near or far geographically, the realities of gathering a hiring committee in one office at one time can be quite daunting, so many companies are turning to video interviews to allow the most flexibility possible, especially early in the hiring process. First, all the typical rules about interview dress, preparation and demeanor apply to a video interview as much as a face-to-face interview. Dress appropriately and neatly. Dress completely, even if they will only see you from the waist up. You never know when you might need to move away from the computer to get paperwork or something else. Telephones and cell phones should be off and out of sight unless needed for something like noting a future appointment. The Gifts You Can Always Give – Time, Energy, ion and Love — from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” It is Christmastime again and many people’s thoughts turn to shopping and presents and consuming in all its forms. As the years have ed, though, I have found myself thinking less about presents that come from the corner store (or Amazon) and more about presents that only I can give. After 27 years of marriage, my wife and I have basically agreed to give nothing more than token gifts on Christmas — something to enjoy opening with our family and something that is, hopefully, useful in our lives. These small presents are more than enough for one very special reason. Throughout the year, we give each other — and those around us — four very special gifts that are unique to us. These gifts include our time, our energy, our ion and our love. Even better, these are gifts that we have been able to give regardless of whether we have been rich or poor, ill or well, together or physically apart. We can give them to family, to friends, and even complete strangers. For me, these are the true gifts of Christmas and the entire year. Jealousy and envy have no place in your career — from the Career Opportunities Podcast [Audio]
Episodio en Career Opportunities with Douglas E. Welch
Jealousy and envy have no place in your career — from the Career Opportunities Podcast Listen to this podcast …or tell your Echo, “Alexa, play the podcast Career Opportunities” It is a rare person who has never suffered from jealousy and/or envy in their life and career. Both of these emotions are simply part of the — all too fragile — human condition. There are many times in our lives when we want what others have and are deeply jealous that they have it. Jealousy and envy can be greatly damaging to your career, though, and lead you to take actions you might not imagine otherwise. They can cause you to be petty, mean, controlling, and outright aggressive towards others if you feel your self-worth is threatened deeply enough. The perverse nature of jealousy and envy, though, is that it matters little in life what others have. Except in the most extreme cases, your accomplishments and your success are your own to control. Life is not a zero-sum game where everything someone else gains, you lose. We all gain and lose on our own merits, our own timeline and our own wants, needs and desires. Actualizado
