Artist of the Week: ESG
Artist of the Week: ESG
ESG, or Emerald, Sapphire and Gold, are a band from South Bronx in New York whose music was based on complex polyrhythms, a funky bass and poppy guitar. Although not very famous, ESG have been quite influential across a wide range of scenes, such as disco, dance-punk, funk and hip-hop. They are one of the most sampled groups ever, and their beats and sounds can be heard on records by Wu-Tang Clan, Beastie Boys, TLC, Big Daddy Kane, Tricky and countless others. However, most samples of their music were used at the time when such practice did not automatically involve compensation for the original authors. That’s why in 1993 ESG wrote a song called Sample Credits Don’t Pay Our Bills. Tracklisting: 1. Moody 2. Tiny Sticks 3. You’re No Good 4. Come Away 5. Dance 6. Talk It 7. Erase You 8. It’s Alright 9.
